Spinal Decompression

What Is Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression?

At Orlando Spine and Wellness Center we perform nonsurgical spinal decompression which is a type of motorized traction that may help relieve back pain. Spinal decompression works by gently stretching the spine. That changes the force and position of the spine. This change takes pressure off the spinal discs, which are gel-like cushions between the bones in your spine, by creating negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated discs may retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This in turn, helps promote movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs so they can heal.

Doctors have used nonsurgical spinal decompression for years in an attempt to treat:

  • Back pain, neck pain and sciatica. Sciatica refers to pain, weakness, numbness or tingling that extends down the legs.
  • Bulging or herniated discs or degenerative disc disease
  • Posterior Facet Syndrome (worn/degenerating spinal joints)
  • Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots

How Is Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression Performed?

You are fully clothed during spinal decompression therapy. Our trained staff will fit you with a harness around your pelvis and another around your trunk. You either lie face down or face up on a computer-controlled table.  The table is operated by a computer which is customized by our staff for each individual patient’s needs.

Treatment may last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes based on the specific needs of the patient and you may require 15 to 25 treatments over five to seven weeks. Before or after therapy, you may have other types of treatment, such as:

  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Heat or cold therapy
  • Electrical muscle stimulation
  • Therapeutic exercises

Can Spinal Decompression Therapy Using The Triton DTS Help My Pain?

Though each patient is different, the clinical results of this type of therapy have been shown to be effective in 86% of patients treated. The common problems of many back conditions are damaged spinal discs, nerve root compression. Posterior facet syndrome leading to poor spinal muscle control. Our treatment program at Orlando Spine and Wellness Center addresses all of these core problems. The specially designed Triton Decompression Traction System creates a controlled unloading of the spine which appears to decrease spinal disc pressure while increasing blood and nutrient exchange. Blood and nutrient exchange are critical to aid in the spinal disc healing process. Muscle strength, control, and endurance can all be improved with our spinal decompression therapy program.

Will My Pain Go Away For Good?

Although it is difficult to predict the future, experience and studies have shown that most patients do find long-term relief or effective management of their pain when they complete the entire recommended treatment program. Regular home exercise will help in maintaining your spinal health and reduce the probability of reoccurrence. As with any comprehensive rehabilitation program, success is based on dedication to the recommended treatment plan as well as the home exercise/stretching plan prescribed.
